The Environmental Education Leadership Program (EELP) is an internship opportunity created to meet the growing demand for environmental and aina-based education in public schools on O'ahu, Hawaii, and Maui islands. We are looking for participants (“Environmental Education Leaders”) who are ages 21 and over, with various academic backgrounds that prepare them to engage students in activities relating to the natural world. They will be placed at one or more schools to provide innovative projects, lessons, and activities to inspire students' curiosity about Hawai'i's natural and cultural resources.
Across the state, participants have helped implement school clubs, gardens, and recycling programs; build aquaponics and hydroponics systems; provide transportation and support for outdoor field trips; create curriculum to increase scientific exploration and environmental literacy; mentor individual students; lead Kupu’s out-of-school programs and connect youth to internship opportunities.
Environmental Education Leaders (EELs) are part of Kupu’s Environmental Education (EE) Department, which works to inspire and prepare local students to pursue careers in natural resources (NR). EELs support the EE Department in its work to build NR career pathways and Programs of Study, improve recruitment into those pathways, and provide meaningful work-based learning (WBL) opportunities to prepare students to lead as professionals and citizens. A large part of this position will require transporting students in Kupuʻs 15-pax vans to field sites. The amount of driving will depend on the location of the school where an EEL is placed.
Program Dates: Various term durations: between 11-months and 13-months. Exact start and end dates to be determined. The preferred start date is mid-July.
